Marchesa 2018 Met Gala Ombré Floral Appliqué Gown worn by Scarlett Johansson
This rare Marchesa gown is crafted in layered tulle featuring an ombré gradient that bleeds from rich maroon to rose to a pale dusty blush at the hem. Delicate appliquéd rose petals are scattered throughout the skirt and train, creating a soft three-dimensional texture.
The bodice is softly sculpted through ruched tulle that wraps the torso in fluid, contoured lines. Designed to be worn off the shoulders, the neckline is framed by clusters of large three-dimensional floral appliqués that extend across the front and back. The straps can also be adjusted to sit on the shoulders.
At the waist, the tulle gathers into a sculptural twist detail, accented with additional floral appliqués that anchor the transition into the skirt, composed of layers of tulle with a continued ombré effect, creating a sweeping finish. Extending from the back neckline is a separate tulle cape that can also be styled as a veil for brides (see pic 3). It mirrors the skirt's ombré palette and scattered petal appliqués, and may be worn trailing behind or draped over the head.
🫧 Reference: Worn by Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet at the 2018 Met Gala, themed "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination". The original red carpet version features more extensive floral appliqué than the RTW version; the rest of the design is exactly identical.
